How To Add Face Lock In Windows 10

The Windows 10 Creators Update arrives April xi, and when it reaches your PC, you'll have a new way to lock information technology when you get up to catch a cup of coffee, conversation with co-workers, or otherwise leave your figurer unattended.

That'south because a new feature chosen Dynamic Lock can automatically lock your PC when your Bluetooth phone goes out of range.

We wouldn't say it'due south i of the very best new features in Windows 10 -- here's a list of our superlative 10 favorites -- only it's a pretty swell addition. Here'south how it works.

At present playing: Scout this: Coffee run? Windows 10 Dynamic Lock lets you simply walk...

Step 1: Pair your phone

Earlier you lot enable Dynamic Lock, you must starting time pair your phone with your PC. You can skip downward to step 2 if that'south already done.

  • On your PC, go to Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices.
  • Plough on Bluetooth with the toggle switch in that location. (Plow on your phone's Bluetooth likewise).
  • Next, tap the "+" push for Add Bluetooth or other device.
  • In the pop-up Add a device window, tap Bluetooth, then choose your device from the list that appears.
  • Prompts should appear on both your PC and telephone. Take them to pair.

In my example, my iPhone wasn't listed after the laptop scanned for Bluetooth devices (it saw only my Apple TV). Updating my laptop's Bluetooth driver, however, stock-still the problem.

To update your PC'due south Bluetooth commuter:

  • Open the Device Managing director (printing the Start push button and type in "Device Manager"), then click to expand the Bluetooth line.
  • Next, right-click on the first Bluetooth item listed (mine says Bluetooth USB Module), tap Update driver and and so cull Search automatically for updated commuter software.

Stride 2: Activate Dynamic Lock

With your PC and phone paired:

  • Get to Settings > Accounts and so tap Sign-in options in the left panel.
  • Ringlet way downwards to the Dynamic Lock section and check the box for Permit Windows to detect when you lot're away and automatically lock the device.
  • That's information technology!

Dynamic Lock in activeness

Just know that Dynamic Lock isn't a foolproof security mechanism for these three reasons (at least as of today):

  • Your PC stays unlocked until y'all walk out of Bluetooth range
  • Your PC notwithstanding stays unlocked for thirty seconds after that
  • If someone hops onto your PC while it's unlocked, Dynamic Lock won't engage at all

When I walked to the other side of my firm, put my phone down and returned to my PC, I didn't run into the lock screen fifty-fifty by the time I sat down -- only merely before I started muttering nasty things about Bluetooth and betas, the PC of a sudden locked.

If you regularly lock your PC when you lot leave your desk, then perhaps Dynamic Lock tin be useful equally a safety internet, kick in to lock your PC should you lot forget, possibly when you run out of your office after receiving an electronic mail near gratis pizza in the briefing room.

Bluetooth issues

Dynamic Lock likewise forces you lot to rely on the connection mysteries of Bluetooth. You probably don't demand me to tell yous that Bluetooth connections can be far from reliable. Perhaps it's simply a function of the beta or particular to my phone and laptop, but the connection dropped betwixt my iPhone and my Windows laptop after Dynamic Lock locked the laptop. (This didn't happen for my colleague Sean Hollister, who used a Surface Book and Android telephone.)

Each time I entered my password to unlock my laptop, the connection between my iPhone and PC dropped. The laptop kept reporting that the 2 were paired, merely my iPhone showed them unconnected. Making matters worse, I couldn't but tap to reconnect but had to remove the devices and get through the pairing procedure all over again.

No unlock

I was also a little disappointed to learn at that place's no Dynamic Unlock part of the equation. The Dynamic Lock feature only locks your PC when you and your Bluetooth phone wander out of range. It doesn't magically unlock it when y'all get dorsum to your desk. For that, you'll need a face-recognizing IR webcam and Windows Hello.

All of my impressions are as of Windows ten build 15063, paired with an iPhone vii Plus. For more than, see the x best features coming to Windows x.
